My first reaction was to suggest it was a degu, until you said it
was black. I haven't seen a black degu as yet. Degus are small
cousins to chinchillas but are most often described as "gerbils on
steroids" :-)
I am most curious to hear the verdict on what the animal is. Would
the pet shop keeper let you take a snap of it to help identify it?
