I don't know of any specific troubles with gcc4.8.1. I have built ghdl with gcc4.8/4.9 trunk in about May, and with gcc4.8.2 recently, so the likelihood of success with 4.8.1 is quite high (assuming you have the matching Gnat installed!) If you want to try, the current ghdl source is available by hg clone http://hg.code.sf.net/p/ghdl-updates/code ghdl-updates or see https://sourceforge.net/projects/ghdl-updates/ I don't consider it ready for a release yet (hope to get there in a few days) but if you clone now and build it, then "hg pull" and a few minutes build time should update you when the time comes.
