It's a command line option to dist.sh

See the test at line 425 of dist.sh 
With no arguments it simply tries to do_Makefile (and fails).  Tristan would 
have picked the value "sources" in anticipation of adding more command line 
options.

(And I'd swear there used to be other command line options, years ago.)

Brian says I lost his wiki page on ghdl-updates, it's now restored. See

Instruction for building GHDL (version 0.31dev) with GCC4.9.2 on Linux.  You 
should be at step 5) now.

You may have to backtrack to see where 'source' is, it's the directory where 
gcc-4.8.2 has been extracted from the downloaded archive.
