I should probably mention that there is already a VHPI based
simulation framework in cocotb
(https://github.com/potentialventures/cocotb). Look under lib/vhpi in
the source. It's not super clear, since cocotb was written for
multiple interface (PLI/VPI and VHPI) and for both Verilog and VHDL.
But digging around you can see the vhpi_* calls.
Indeed, that's another entry point!
