Updated in `50f611a4`. The empty-union special validation was removed from
`try_extend_nulls`; the existing union `extend_nulls` callbacks remain the
single validation path. The fallible callback now runs before committing the
parent length/null-count/null bitmap state, while the zero-length early return
remains a no-op. `git diff --check` passed; cargo validation could not run
locally because Cargo is not installed.
