Months ago I considered progressives and did some research. The
variety of types is dizzying. Apparently Zeiss makes some great ones,
if you want to spend several hundred bucks.
Somewhere I encountered this bit of advice, which I copied:

- - - - - Read this before purchasing Progressive Lenses - - - - -
- - - - - There are two large areas of the lens that you cannot see
through. Imagine an hourglass. The bulge areas at the bottom and top
of the lens are for near and distance vision, and the thinner
"corridor" connecting them is for intermediate distances. On either
side of the narrow portion of the hourglass objects will appear
blurry.
Less expensive lenses have a narrower corridor that can restrict the
viewing area considerably. And, on smaller lens sizes, it is necessary
to slice off a portion of the bottom; the smaller the frame size, the
smaller the reading portion of the lens. - - - - -

- - - - - You must learn to move your head to see things; you cannot
just move your eyes because of the blurry parts of the lens. It is
common to experience dizziness and headaches during the time that you
are adapting. Some people never adapt. - - - - -

The head-movement required for lined bifocals is one thing, But it's
easy to manage and adapt to. And I don't mind using computer glasses
at my desk and when grocery shopping. Progressives aren't worth the
extra trouble and money for me, especially since I've been rear-ended
in the car several times and have some neck issues. And I'm not
sufficiently vain to want to hide the line.
