Hi all:
My company is preparing for a GLPI implementation, we have been
running GLPI in a test environment for several months now and are very
pleased with what we're finding. I do have a few questions regarding
some aspects of GLPI I'm not necessarily that clear on, mostly regarding
the software license tracking features. We are using GLPI in
combination with OCSNG. I am running 0.68.2 in our test environment.
1. What exactly is the difference between a globalized license, a
free license and an unglobalized license? When OCS imports software it
is all getting a globalized license by default. In order to assign a
cap on the number of installs, I have to unglobalize the license. I
have not figured out how to convert a globalized license to free. I'm
also finding that when I first unglobalize a license the number of
installs remaining seems to be being determined randomly, how is the
default for the remaining installs derived?
A. As a follow up to the above question, we had one case where we
unglobalized a license, and the unglobalized license turned into two
different line items. Both defaulted to 100 installs, and they each
seemed to count towards the total. In each case the serial number was
"_global_"
2. How exactly do updates work? An example is appropriate here.
Say we purchase 100 licenses for Acrobat 7.0. When Acrobat 8.0 comes
out we get a free upgrade for those 100 licenses, of course not everyone
will upgrade at the same time. Even if we specify that Acrobat 8.0 is
an upgrade for 7.0, GLPI doesn't seem to be applying the 100 licenses
for both 7.0 and 8.0. For example, if we have 100 Acrobat licenses, and
5 people install 7.0 we then have 95 remaining. If one of those five
people upgrades to 8.0, we still have 95 licenses left, the upgrade
didn't use an additional license. Can I use the upgrade feature to set
a system like this up?
3. We're planning on importing as much of our machine data as
possible from OCS. We have the OCS agent deployed to some random test
machines, a representative of the types of machines we have. We're
having a problem importing some of our laptops. GLPI seems to think
that a laptop in its docking station and a laptop outside its docking
station are two different machines. OCS doesn't agree, in fact OCS is
seeing no duplicates. GLPI sees one machine of type portable, and
another machine of type docking station, all other information is
identical. Is there a reason this is happening? So far when I see
these new duplicate machines appear, instead of reimporting them I just
link them against the existing machines in GLPI. Is this the best way
to handle this situation or is there some configuration I can perform in
GLPI to help it better understand that a laptop in its docking station
is the same as a laptop outside its docking station?
4. Finally, while OCS is collecting most of the information we
need, it is unable to collect some information for devices, it cannot
automatically fill in inventory numbers, and some of its information for
monitors is incomplete. I have an Excel spreadsheet with the missing
information. Is there any way to import that Excel sheet into GLPI, say
by converting the spreadsheet to a CSV file and importing that? I just
don't want to type information in again if I don't have to.
5. Thanks a lot for all your help, and as I said this is a great
product so far.
6. Ryan
