I don't know if it will make any difference for this particular problem or not, but I thought the group might benefit from this as well.
A while back, a friend forwarded a notice that there was a new memtest86+ in town. It is supposed to handle a lot more stuff. I haven't yet had a need for it -- no new boxes to set up or new failures to diagnose :-) -- so I can't vouch for it, but I intend to try it the next time I start seeing (new) wacky behavior.
