According to what I find on the web, BASE64 is portable across more character sets. http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/utilities/uuencode.html#tag_04_163_18 I'm actually surprised there was a real reason. I figured someone was just reinventing the wheel again. It's what we do.
