I've used many different printers over the years, as most of you have.
For the most part I have found HP and Epson to be the most Linux
friendly (I have not personally used Brother). The printers that have
ink tanks rather than heads embedded tend to be problematical as you
point out. If you use third-party inks, they will ruin the heads either
by leaking or just do not contain the right chemicals. Generally, I can
expect an HP ink-jet printer to last longer. My older HP all-in-one on
my wife's desk use to have the scanning head get stuck and I'd have to
physically drop the printer on its side. Most of our printing at home is
via an HP ColorLaserJet 4500N (that I got free). her current all-in-one
is used when we want to scan a document, or for a quick print from Windows.
