It helps to be sober AND at the console.  Parties are not the best
places for troubleshooting. <g>  Besides, last time, a certain fellow
admin of this box was taksed with fixing bind... and there were TONS of

Would removing gpm be good enough?  We don't even have a mouse on this
box.

I'm thinking this is the problemm.  After searching public archives
(after numerous 404 errors and unanswered questions on this subject) it
looks like bad RAM.

Nope.  I had fallen asleep on the couch.  It wasn't working when I got
up. (Third shift sleep woes...)

...or it could be a bad kvm switch... it's ancient.  And I was
installing Mandrake on the othe box on the kvm at the time, so switching
back & forth could have caused this.

They only give errors if you don't manually umount them.  But I removed
the supermount option from the fstab anyway.

...time to splurge for more RAM...
