It was the first UNIX to ship on a 64 bit architecture and to truly
use 64 bit pointers, etc.

I would agree with that wholeheartedly. I wasn't aware until recently
that other groups in the company (outside of UNIX development) have to
get special license PAKs; we're not allowed to share ours with them,
and it's due to some of the IP involved. (No, I don't know particulars).

However, I'm sure that a lot of people will be asking the same question
as Ben, both externally and internally, and I'm sure someone fairly
high up will make a decision sooner or later. I cannot, do not, and will
not speak for Compaq, but as a long-time employee of DEC/Compaq, I
would simply ask that you all be sensitive to the fact that 1 of 9
current employees will lose their job out of all this. Some will come
from the current incarnation of H-P, but the bulk will be from Compaq.
It's going to be a long process - about 6-12 months - to obtain all of
the requisite regulatory approvals (US DOJ, US FTC, European Commission,
etc.) and very, very few people know all the details and under US SEC
regulations, they can't say anything. We're in for a long winter...
