You should also install build-essential, python2.4-dev and
python-celementtree packages, besides python-imaging (PIL). You might use
apt-get for that or even Python's easy_install-2.4 (first install it with):

wget http://peak.telecommunity.com/dist/ez_setup.py
python2.4 ez_setup.py
