You need at least egcs-1.1 (as mentioned in the install).  Better yet,
use gcc-2.95.2.

That's ok, stepmake is contained in LilyPond.

Guile-1.3.2 is broken.  For LilyPond 1.2.x, use guile-1.3 or guile-1.3.4.
Lilypond-1.3.x needs guile-1.3.4.

But you'll have to be more specific than 'dumps core' for me to shed
any more light on your problem.
