I cannot say for certain as I am still using release 3.8, but I believe
that release 4.4 has had a major improvement to the account selector in
that it no longer requires strict entry of parent accounts in order to
select child accounts. Thus, if your primary concern is the number of
keystrokes for entry, there would be little or no advantage to dropping
parent accounts from your tree. You might save a little ink if you did
print something out.

Which brings up the second major improvement, the reports are most of the
way through a major overhaul, so you might find that you can stop using
external spreadsheets for some or all of your reports.

Now that I think about it, you probably need to keep the top level accounts
as they determine the attributes that child accounts use to maintain
adherence to the accounting rules.
