I have 2.6.19, and in Edit » Preferences » Register Defaults I have ticked "Only display leaf account names." Having chosen my bottom-level account names carefully, I don't have to go through, for example, "Liabilities:Credit Cards:AP CapitalOne" but instead just type "AP C" and the account is filled in.
