Goanet next meets in Goa: January 7, 4 pm (meeting point: Kala Academy canteen). Goanet founder Herman Carneiro will be there. See you there! ------------------------------
Agnelo, It is very likely that Bernado is not using his/her real name. I can fully understand why this person who supports legalizing prostitution will not want to reveal her identity. Unfortunately, many (most?) goans ascribe a moral judgement to the profession of prostitution. For example in your post below, you equated prostitutes to bums. Hence people and specially women, who defend the free choice made my prostitutes may also be stigmatised by society. We all know how fast gossip spreads in Goa. We have already had a long drawn out discussion on this issue before, but I fully support the views of the poster. Barring solving the underlying economic and social factors that result in prostitution, legalizing prostitution is one of the better metions to ensure that the women (and men) who engage in this practice get the best protection and maximum economic rewards for their difficult job. I have seen the benefits of legalized prostitution in Singapore. The system is extremely organized and the workers are well taken care of. Financial and legal transparency has ensured that there is no criminal element to this profession, not unlike what happened after the production of alcohol was legalized in the 1920s in the US. If people are so eager to ban professions, I suggest they first start on enforcing pre-existing bans on things like child labor or indentured labor.
