According to me, the reasons for the Catholic goans migration are:

1.the migration has nothing to do with the year 1961. Migration was taking
place much before that - even as late 1800's and early 1900's according to
tales narrated to me by my late father.
2.one reason for mainly Catholic migration could be that the christian religion
being liberal and catholic did not impose any restrictions on travel whereas
Hindu society being bound by customs, traditions and fear of crossing the
kala-pani rarely crossed the seas.
3. Many catholics were sea farers as against Hindu goans. Many of them having
tasted the life in the West, settled down there.
4. Catholic migration did not only take place overseas. Many goan catholics who
moved out of Goa settled down in places like Belgaum, Bangalore, Bombay, Poona
and even as far as Calcutta and Karachi.Whereas to my knowledge, the HIndu
goans mainly moved to Maharashtra.
5. The early catholic goan migrants were mainly cooks, tailors and musicians.A
number of them set by bakeries and tailoring shops in places like Bombay and
Poona which were well patronised by the upper crust of society. Musicians were
in great demand in hotels and the film industry .
6.the catholic goans were conversant only in Konkani and a little bit of
Portuguese, with a few knowing English. Whereas the Hindu goan said his prayers
in Marathi and not konkani. Why this was so I have no idea. Perhaps someone
could throw some light. As such the Hindu goan had no problem while moving to
Maharashtra.
7. the catholic goan with his westernised habits, knowledge of English, and
food tastes could easily assimilate into western society.
8.Post 1961, migrations have not only been among catholic goans. A number of
Hindus too have since migrated. In fact, many Gujaratis took advantage of the
Portuguese citizenship to move into Europe, by submitting fake documents. This
is one of the main reasons for the Portuguese consulate taking a long time to
process applications.
9.Today, I would think that Hindu migration far outstrip Catholic migration.
The US, UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand have large Indian populations.

Cheers!!

Marshall
