Thanks Rajan, for posting the link to that recording of Channeachya raati.

The words are truly poetic and a far cry from the juvenile rhymes that
masquerade as lyrics in contemporary Konkani songs.

Perhaps someone could transcribe and even translate the lyrics for
everyone to appreciate?

I also know there was a controversy and court case regarding the
ownership of the lyrics / tune. Has that been resolved?

Uday Bhembre lost a lot of credibility when he made a convoluted
argument against the use of Konkani in the Roman Script. His only
point was publishing and printing statistics which were obviously not
well researched and definitely not providing any logical conclusion to
favour his viewpoint. He has subsequently compounded his error by
continually repeating the same argument and digging an even deeper
hole for himself.

How the mighty have fallen.

But I stray. Let not this be the seed for another Devnagri-Roman
debate. Uday Bab's lyrics were brilliant. Let's acknowledge that.

Cheers!

Cecil

To Goanet -

Ulhas Buyao expressed his love for Goa during
the height of the Opinion Poll crisis 40 years
ago through his famous song -

http://www.parrikar.org/misc/channeachya-raati.mp3

The female voice is one Gavaskar (I forget her first
name). The lyrics are by Digu's confidante Uday
Bhembre, now pen&tongue-tied as Goa is being
taken to the knackers by his pals.

Recording courtesy of Sidhanath Buyao. The audio
quality is not very good and I haven't had the time
to haul it to the digital laundry. The copy at AIR Panjim
is as bad (both, I presume, are transfers from 78s).

Warm regards,

r
