It is not just Goans but most Indians do it also. The reason they do this is even with minimum wage, they live miserably and put away most of their earnings. Gas stations are usually a good opportunity for employment. If they work 10 hours at even $5/hr., that is $50.00/day or $350/wk or $1400/mth. approx. Food is mainly daal bath (or $2 or $3/day) or $60/mth--chicken is very cheap--as low as 60 cents/lb. or less. They live in crowded conditions mostly in slums for $150/200/mth. Food and shelter is $260 and approx. $40 misc. expenses for a total of $300/mth. They are left with approx. $1100 to put away -- or $13,200/yr. If they work even just four years, they sock away $52,800. - a princely sum for a Goan/Indian when they go back home and sport Ray-Bans in their shirt pockets...

That's why they do it.

Hi Selma, I always wondered why is it that some of our Goans
are willing to
do these sort of jobs abroad but never in Goa?

Because no one who does these sort of jobs in Goa can make ends meet, Paulo.
