Selma,
I guess u hv not come across Goemkars, who are holding top positions on
board the ships as Captains, Chief Officers, Chief Engineers, Supt...etc.
Do u think its easy now to get a job on ship as a cook without doing any
catering course n hotel experience. For even a trainee assistant cook, minimum 10th std with 1 year in 5 star hotel experience is a must..Probably the guy who did his Hotel Management (if its 3 year Diploma) will be joining as Catering Officer or chef de partie if he has min two years experince in star hotels.

Those days the gulfie/shippy worked as cooks waiters only to give their children a better education.

Dear Paulo,
I agree with you that there is a certain stigma attached to these jobs in
Goa but consider it from their point of view. Many of these men are
educated atleast upto 12th standard. I know quite a few who have done
their Bcom and are now working onboard ships as cooks. I even know someone
who did his Hotel management and is thinking of going onboard the ship.
Those who are not going onboard the ship will make their way to the UK and
join the packing crews in Swindon.

Dear Roland,
Please don't be so hard on Goa University. During its reign of 22 years, it has managed to produce more cooks onboard ships, more packers in Swindon, more houseboys in Kuwait and more illegal waiters in the US than any other university.
