Tony - I remember reading about cow/horse dung !! eric. On a DIY note, some time back the Agriculture Department was encouraging the cultivation of oyster mushrooms. These are grown on paddy straw which is made sterile and then seeded with the spawn. The crop takes around 21 days and the winter months are most suitable for this. I used to cultivate oyster mushroom regularly for a number of years. The results were very encouraging. You can cultivate the mushrooms any where even under the eaves or in a corner of the house. It does not require sophisticated technology. Simple materials - paddy straw, plastic bags, spawn, a little effort and patience is what is needed. The spawn used to be available at Lulu's farm in Anjuna and later at ICAR at Old Goa. Perhaps Miguel Braganza can do a write up on the methodology.
