points directly..

OK, off the main track ... but this worries me  ... I'm losing EXIF
data? I'd (naively )  assumed it copied files intact!

Also me getting off topic here but "why?" I take the opposite
stance .. I'm concerned about damaging
the CF reader contacts in the camera ... damaging the USB connection
seems less critical.

Right .. so this hinges on what versions of what you are running ?
KDE for the the 'conventional; Ubuntu ...what kernel version
does it still have HAL?
