My first linux install was a great man floppy disks downloaded at
7500baud and installed on i286 w/3mb onboard memory and a 40 mb hard
drive. Slackware iirc, but it was credited to Patrick Volkerding. I had
also tried minix w/o much appeal.

Had to be Slackware, since Volkerding is the original
author /founder and who continues to be the project owner.

As an aside, any idea what's happened to the package browser? Somebody in Italy was doing it and then apparently was struck by lightning or something...

MINIX was originally developed as a teaching tool for
higher-education institutions - it was never meant to be
an operating system for "general consumption", as
GNU/Linux has become.
