I don't know what the big deal is. The new iPhone's 3G network is reasonably fast and the screen is unreasonably small, so overall it should perform quite well. I've seen the older iPhone running Safari and Google maps and it was pretty good under the old slower network. Things are only going to get faster, so I would think it would be better for Google to concentrate on remove bugs and making the overall maps system faster than adding ponderous code to cover a small increase in download speed.
