The caching seems rather agressive.

I am using the ipod itouch.. not the iphone.. but it is running
the latest Os upgrade my network connection is via a WIFI
(for the phone usage fees are flat I think)

And no I am not certain what benefit offered by smaller tiles
in this context.(That the regular google maps application uses
reduced size tiles might be a sign there is a benefit.)

SVG works great now by the way in the iphone OS 2.1
 Safari .. Open Layers has no problems using it anyway.
