You're right, SVG doesn't work in IE hence the need to convert to PNGs. That was just a test to see how the tiles look before and after converting from SVG to PNGs.
Only have screens as all of this to try and get running locally. Haven't put it up on my webspace as yet. I suppose I was looking for alternatives to GD, ended up working out how to create rasterized SVG's and am now at the point where I can put it up online...
