You have a definite speed issue with your server
even doing the wms request correctly you will
likely see the issue... Check in to pyramiding
the tiff perhaps? It has been a while since I used
geoserver but I recall really large tiffs didnt read
fast (... but 45mb doesnt sound so large)

That said your fastest method will be to
pretile your image and not use the wms
at all. This is most useful if your data
source isnt constantly changing.
