"the Directions API may only be used in conjunction with displaying
results on a Google map; using Directions data without displaying a
map for which directions data was requested is prohibited."

I'm not a lawyer, its not my company that will get sued, you should
satisfy yourself that you are not creating a derivative work from
Google's content, and that you are displaying Google's Directions data
(in whole, with any warnings and notices) as expected.

I don't know of any other way to get street polylines for free; though
you might consider OpenStreetMap, or paying for it.
