[Google Maps API v3] Feeding Google maps from KML only Blue Markers

In my attempt to populate Google Maps from a kml file var kmllayer = new google.maps.KmlLayer I only seem to be able to get Blue Markers. I have attempted using the styles <style  id></style id> with <styleUrl></styleUrl> with both reference to the id with # and full URL in the kml document with no success.
