IMO this should remove all child *nodes*, not only elements.

Line 324: DOM.removeChild(containerElement, child);
That only removes elements right? So
<div id=rootpanel>Some <i>mixed</i> content</div>
wouldn't be cleared correctly.
Any reason this isn't using setInnerHTML("") ?
