We're doing similar things using Winconnect Server XP, except that it just requires any device that can RDP. With thin clients or PCs, we share the printer using LPD (GDI cheap laser printers don't work). Ideally all printers are named the same so when you login to a terminal it automatically connects to %clientname%\tray1 (and more if you like) and sets your default printer.

This is not as good as your setup because
        a) it's not as secure
b) it costs more, but it cost's a whole lot less than a traditional client/server network.
