I've no idea about whether LaTeX can make output with a transparent 
background.   If not, you can make the white background transparent by 
an option in ImageMagick.

% convert PopulusSion-main.pdf PopulusSion-main.png
% convert PopulusSion-main.png -transparent white  tmp.png
