I think this kind of tricks is the best solution (though png is not a vector format), you can certainly write a small script to convert the pdf in svg with no background. If you're not working with OpenType fonts, there is also the possibility to use dvisvg on the dvi file to produce a svg, but you'll still have to remove the background after that.
