I do not use a GUI, but I compile in a shell, with the PDF always opened in a PDF viewer (okular). On each compilation, the PDF viewer reloads immediately the PDF (it does this by default, there is nothing special to setup). So keeping the editor and the PDF viewer side-by-side on screen (plus a small shell window) provides a basic TeXworks-like workspace.
