The culprit is certainly the LaTeX update, but I admit the error is a
bit puzzling... Anyway, we recently fixed things in
https://github.com/gregorio-project/gregorio/pull/633
which would be quite easy to backport to you GregorioTeX files I think.
Can you try and tell us if it worked?

thanks much for the quick reply and the key to a solution!
Indeed, the gregoriotex.tex fix made it, w/ two modifications:
1. There is no gregoriotex-main.tex in 3.0.3, but only gregoriotex.tex
where I could apply the luatexlocalleftbox/luatexlocalrightbox fix.
2. I had to replace gre@localleftbox and gre@localrightbox by
grelocalleftbox and grelocalrightbox, i.e., omit the "at" (took me a
while until I detected that).
