Perhaps the right design decision would be to have a maximum volume setting that slightly overdrives the speaker for audio files that had the maximum dynamic range, but would be acceptable for audio files which don't have such a large dynamic range. Also, if there were finer or more adjustments in the volume, that would work. Remember the ear's response to sound is logarithmic!
