It would be nice if all of the book readers for the blind would read Kindle books. ----- Original Message ----- From: "qubit" <[email protected]>

A very interesting quote.
I can take or leave Jon Stossel's opinions, but he really didn't say enough
here to base an opinion on (regarding the kindle issue).
I still think the booksense goes beyond being a book reader -- the kindle
doesn't do audio -- at least not yet. So it really makes more sense for
kindle to accessify its pc software and tell the blind students to carry a
netbook instead of a kindle, and then share its implementation with GWMicro
and other hardware makers to get kindle working for the blind.
This should work whether the author's guild wants their books made audible
or not.
Oh well, off soapbox.
Happy listening.
I just got a bunch of dvs soundtracks to listen to...Hope they're good.
Take care.

Now why didn't the makers of Kindle think of that before the lawsuits? Why
do people have to make things so hard when they could be so easy.

Maybe then John Stossel would not have made the comments he did about the
Kindle and blind people. Check out the link to the article for his comments
that were also on his Fox business program:

yes, and kindle is currently working on "accessifying" the kindle by
making
the menus talk. Having the booksense firmware read kindle books would
siphon off some of their blind customers. I wonder if the kindle people
have thought of sharing their file format info with companies like GWMicro
who produce book readers. That would get them off the hook as far as
making
their hardware accessible, while still making money on kindle book sales.

That is what I have been thinking and wondering about this. That could
really help a lot of things, particularly if they could beat the cost of
the
Kindall.

Is the Booksense DS maybe going to compete with the Kindle? Is it
possible
to get Kindle books on the Booksense?

As far as who would purchase the Booksense DS, or how GW Micro is
marketing
it, it says the following from the GW Micro web site:

The OLED display is fantastic for the classroom or students who have
learning difficulties. Teachers can use the display to see what the
students
are doing,
or to see what the BookSense is saying. Students with learning
difficulties
will be able to follow along on the screen when reading an accessible
DAISY
textbook or a document to help reinforce the material. Students will be
able
to see and hear the textbooks, and they can even adjust the rate of how
fast
they read to make reading fun and easy.

The BookSense DS is the choice for educators, students, people with
neuropathy, and any blind or visually impaired person who wants to easily
access music,
books, documents, and more. Weighing in at only 0.14 pounds, the
BookSense
DS is easy to carry and easy to handle.

I would also be shocked if the introduction of the Booksense DS has any
effect on the support of the Booksense at all. GW Micro would have to
answer
the question on possible upgrades to the Booksense DS.

Maybe I'm missing something? But why would someone who is blind want it?
From the sound of it, you would almost have to have perfect vision to
read
the display. Do you have a link for the audio? I must admit to being
curious.

Interesting, I wonder how they did that? The display must be very small!

Hi,

Actually, there was a short audio description given from the show last
week in San Diego telling us that the new unit is a bit smaller than
the current models, even with a display!

I would imagined there will be no effect. It will also probably be
larger in size because of the display.

Hello. How does the new introduction of the BookSense DS effect
current BookSense users? Will it still be supported? Is there a way
to trade in a current BookSense for a BookSense DS? Thanks.

Louis
