Yes this is true -- probably much of the logic in the kindle player is to
control the selection and downloading of books; reading is a matter of
putting it up on the screen.
I even heard that the kindle system keeps track of what books you have paid
for and gives you up to 5 copies (for 5 kindles). If you install a 6th, it
will zap or delete one of the other ones. That is from another list and
just hearsay, but I know it tries to enforce copyright. That kind of thing
would need to go in the booksense too, unless they tweaked the kindle book
in some way that would prevent it from running on a regular kindle player,
so you wouldn't share copies. That being the case, why not just convert the
book to daisy and upload it to bookshare.org?
An interesting debate.

Before everyone wanders to far down the wrong path, I doubt seriously if
the booksense will do kendle books. My wife has a kendle and loves it.
Some books can be read via text to speech and some cannot, even though
the menus don't speak at all. The way she gets books is via connection
to a cell tower, the kendle is wireless, and she has an account set up
with amazon. Ordering books, wish lists and all that is done on the
kendle. Each has its own unique serial number so when she connects, it
knows who it is and what account and so forth.

Sure it would be possible, but they'd have to set up a page to download
books, you'd have to have a special key like we do for nls and so forth.
I really think they'd much rather sell kendles than adapt someone elses
hardware.
