Hi.

First, you're not going to be able to get the spelling of a word in an NLS
book. NLS books are recorded, not read from text by the built-in speech
synthesizer.

When you are reading a book from Bookshare or another source of books in
text format, the text is there to be spelled out, moved through by sentence
and paragraph and so forth.

When reading an NLS book, you are listening to a recording. There is no
associated file containing text to search, move through by anything but
time increments or spell out. The information is not in the audio file.

This can be a little confusing, since both are "Daisy" files. But all Daisy
is is a way of marking sections in a file so a Daisy player can navigate
through them. Some Daisy files are recorded. Some are text. A few sources
provide both recorded and text files which can be coordinated so you can go
back and forth between the audio portion and the text. NLS Daisy books,
however, only have an audio component.

As for the other problem you've had, I wonder if you might be doing
something I did the first time or two I tried to use the time jump feature.

I set the interval to skip using the "Time Interval" option, but then forgot
to use the down-arrow to move back to the menu item which is just called
"Time".

So when I was still sitting on the "Time Interval" menu option, the left and
right arrows moved me through the possible selections for that setting--
i.e. 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute and so on.

It is necessary to first use the left and right arrows to select the amount
of time to skip and then use the down arrow to move back to the "Time"
option. After that, the left and right arrows skip backward and forward by
the amount you have selected.

If that's not what's happening, I'll have to leave it to someone else to
trouble-shoot for you.

Hope that helps.

Subject: [GW-Booksense] navigating an nls book

Hi all -- I am having trouble getting my booksense to navigate an nls book.
What I was hoping was that I would be able to do things like skip back and
reread an increment, and hopefully even stop and spell a word. Well, I find

nothing on the booksense that supports spelling, but I followed the
instruction for use of the arrow keys to choose an increment (up/down
arrows) and skip forward or back using the left and right arrows.
It fails completely on one of my books. I swear I got it to work on the
first book I read, but when I pause in my current book and set the increment

to 5 seconds, then hit the left arrow to jump backward that amount, it is
doing nothing -- in fact, left and right arrow is simply mimicking what the
up/down arrows are supposed to do, and the reading keeps continuing no
matter what I do (except pause).
Can anyone make a suggestion?
Thanks -- I'm loving reading, but annoyed at a few nits.
