As I listened to the GW Micro staff on Main Menu this evening, one thing
jumped out at me. It was mentioned in the context of Quick Books and that is
why I mention it here. The point was made at least twice that programs which
appear difficult for blind users are often inconvenient for sighted users as
well. I think we as blind computer users just assume that sighted people
never have any issues with any software at all simply because they can see
the screen. Before anyone gets up in arms, I think we can all agree that
blindness certainly complicates the issue. Having said that, let's keep in
mind that some programs are just going to be a pain to use, especially with
speech. Window-Eyes 7 beta 1 has been out for about nine hours or so as I
write this. It seems realistic to me to think that we should give
Window-Eyes scripting a good year before we decide whether it really is as
good as it seems. I'm not suggesting that there won't be some really awesome
scripts written in less time then that, but I am just trying to look at the
bigger picture here. We all want our favorite application to work
immediately. Users of the other major screen reader have been wanting the
same thing for several years now. Let's give the Window-Eyes community time
to learn how to use the tools that GW Micro have created and start really
working hard on some really practical scripts that will impact our daily
lives. I'll bet if we don't hound the GW Micro staff constantly and we let
some really talented programmers including those who work for GW Micro play
around under the hood of Window-Eyes, we all may be pleasantly surprised.

Please don't think I am flaming anyone. Maybe I should have just gone to
bed instead of trying to wax philisophical, but I decided to put in my two
cents here. Please take my comments in the spirit in which they were
intended. I'm not even sure that was a real sentence so I'll stop now. Good
night! (smile)

Subject: regardin window eyes 7 and or aftr if any accounting packages can
be looked at and scripted regarding if any scriptor will want ot script
small business applications especially quickbooks

Hello to any scriptor out there , who wants to take on a project in which
you will have lots of users wanting to get your script would be for some one
to make an excellent script to be able to access quickbooks with windoweyes
7. I know that are there are short cuts available to quickbooks and that
can get me half way there but I would like to have more access to
quickbooks and scripting would make geting things done a bit easier then I
can do currently, the competition at least I can do some what of a job with
quickbooks but then when I want to use window eyes then I run into problems
and issues, and if that can be taken care of I would really appreciate it.
This would open up lots of oppurtunities to the blind as far as the
management of books for small business in which packages like quickbooks ar
used, i currently use peachtree to accomplish most of my job at work as an
accountant by profession and I get clients wanting me to do their books in
which they hav had others previously set up there books in quickbooks an it
can be a challenge in getting my work done but I would like to make that a
bit easier , if anyone wants to take on the project, I would be willig on
helping them on testing their script as well as letting them know how they
can enhance and improve the user experience for the blind while using small
business packages like quickbooks.
