Hi Reg,

At one time, Jamal had a script out which bypassed the normal method WE used
for reading when you used the arrow keys; I think it was meant to solve this
problem, but it had problems of it's own at times. It is called Direct
Text. I know this sounds strange, but I thought this problem had been
fixed, so if you happen to still be running the direct text script, I'd try
disabling it first; if you aren't running it, then this is the kind of
problem it was meant for, so I'd give it a try.

The next script to look for is Windows Maximizer. I've had exactly this
kind of issue when using windows maximizer, because it tries to maximize
almost any window, and some which aren't meant to be maximized, it did so
any way, then I found they wouldn't read correctly. so, if you're running
windows maximizer, I'd disable it and try without it. I've switched over to
windows manager for automatic maximizing of windows, because it makes you
specify what should be maximized, where-as windows maximizer makes you
specify what should not, and it's something that gets forgotten by most of
us when we come across a window which can't be maximized.

finally, to see if a dialog can be maximized, I just use the standard
technique of alt-spacebar and then see if the maximize choice is available
on the system menu popup.

I hope one of these works for you, as I don't have access to a 2007 pc, but
I will try this on 2010.

Chip

Thanks Chip. OK, first basic question. I obviously know how to maximise
the main window, but I don't see any means of confirming the status of
individual dialogues. How do I do that? Right now, in the file name edit
box, the arrow keys will speak the first character the first time I address
the box. After that, it speaks no characters at all, not even the first
one. I get around this by making sure I'm at the beginning of the box and
then I can type the whole file name, being sure that the old name will be
erased. I can then tab away from the box and back to it, so Window-Eyes will
read the whole thing, which it does just fine. It just won't read
individual characters. Don't know if that identifies my problem any better.

Reg
