Happy 4th everyone: I have this same problem but a somewhat different outcome. Windows Update tells me I have two important updates: SP1 for Office 2010 and IE9. I select the service pack update and it is highlighted on the screen. (I am partially sighted.) When I try to locate the Install button, there is a message that "no updates have been selected" and I am returned to the first screen. I cannot get past this impasse. . At the lower left of the screen, I have a notice that updates were installed yesterday; if so, I don't know what they were.
I changed my settings to "download the update" and then ask me if I want to install them. So far, I have received no messages. Also, the icon in the Windows Notification area that indicates updates are available has disappeared. Maybe Redmond gave that part of their system a long weekend off!
