fran, about service packs not being highlited, there is a check box to
the left. I had the exact same issue and I didn't hear "check box' with
Window Eyes. A sighted person told me about the check boxes and
manually installed the updates with difficulty getting the error
messages, fixing them and multiple restarts. I now have my updates set
to automatically install and all seems to be well.
Next time I get the error, I will try temporarily turning off AVG
firewall and making sure windows firewall is on and remembering to look
for the checkboxes with the mouse cursor.
I am glad the thread about update issues is on the Window Eyes list as I
had problems with the updates. sometimes sighted help likes to blame
the screen reader for these types of things. that may not be the
problem here, but you don't know until you ask. It is good to know I am
not the only one with the problem updating Windows and that there are
solutions to try. Having updates finally properly installed makes my pc
safer and run better so I can use Window Eyes effectively for all my
computer needs.

I have a notice that updates were installed yesterday; if so, I don't know
what they were.
I changed my settings to "download the update" and then ask me if I want to
install them. So far, I have received no messages. Also, the icon in the
Windows Notification area that indicates updates are available has
disappeared.
Maybe Redmond gave that part of their system a long weekend off!
