A little follow-up here: 

Several of you privately suggested using the placemarker feature now 
incorporated in WE to do this.  And most certainly this works, and it does 
so beautifully.
However, it probably requires more steps than my approach does so it 
doesn't truly simplify things.
I was hoping for a solution more direct.
