I have read elsewhere that there is an organization that has received a grant
to offer Windows 7 computers to SSI
recipients for $20. This would be worth considering for people who are
currently unable to upgrade from XP. The
web site is

http://www.computersfortheblind.net/index-2.html

but I don't know much about this program. According to what I read on the
TopTech list, those not getting SSI can
get these for $150. I realize this only helps US citizens, though.

Unsupported operating systems are not the only issue that confronts us with our
computers. Whether we like it or
not, our hard drives will evenetually fail, we just don't know exactly when.
There are other parts of our
computers that will fail for one reason or another, and often it is more
expensive to fix them than it is to buy
an inexpensive new computer. None of this is easy for people on low incomes,
but it means that giving some
thought to how to replace a computer needs to happen even without the pressure
to upgrade operating systems.
