It's not really a question of being thoughtless. Well, perhaps it is, but not directly. Most of the time, when I've had a mishap that erased something important, it was a script or program that didn't behave as expected. Wildcards expanded in a way that I didn't want, the command was executed in the wrong directory, reversed the parameters to a command and overwrote something that I meant to copy, things like that. In 20 years of working with computers, I've found ways to "accidentally" do things that would probably shock and dismay you. The read-only attribute is good, but ACL's are better and are harder to override. I have a couple little bits of code, called "protect" and "unprotect", that revoke and grant me write permission on directories. This way, if I need to make modifications I can. Most of the time, though, the data stays read-only and I can't mess with it.
