Hi Dennis,

On the CNN web site it has "Breaking News" on the site and what I am going
to do is extract that link for breaking news for it has a class for it and will post that
along with the link associated to it.
Now the app when done will have that alert and an option to display the
CNN page but with only links and such and none of the other garbage for I will
sort out all the display formats and just post links and there associated text
messages.

I am going to experiment with some Java Script stuff listed there but will
leave all of that out for now and see if the the extraction is enough for those
that want instant news and the page stripped of all it's format.

If any other ideas and feedback just let me know and I will see what
options are available. For I will also place the actual page into the list but
can be slow in loading for all the images, icons and stuff they want to
display, including ads which are easy to sort out of the list.

         Sincerely
         Bruce

Hi Chip,
Thanks, I had looked at the CNN.com for I noticed a different break-out
from before because Headline news went another way, so I have the page for
breaking news.
I will look at it tonight along with what you sent.

     Thanks, Bruce

Bruce,

Below are the URI's for the various CNN RSS XML files in categories I
thought were of general interest; each address is the list of headlines for
that category:

http://rss.cnn.com/rss/cnn_us.rss
http://rss.cnn.com/rss/money_latest.rss
http://rss.cnn.com/rss/cnn_tech.rss
http://rss.cnn.com/rss/cnn_health.rss

hth,

Chip

OK Dennis,
I will look at it and see what I can do. First I will make an app to
capture the html and go from there.
I will get back with you on it.

         Bruce

Bruce I was referring to the CNN app idea. I think it's a good one.

Hi Dennis,

Are you talking about the CNN idea or just apps in general?

I would like to do something like this but too many things have
prevented me from even getting started. I am always on the fly and do not
even read entire emails, thus missing the point when it is not in the first
5 or so lines.
The other reason is too many viruses out there and I even got burnt
by the federal government which installed spy ware on there FTC sight, which
was a recently government created web site...NSA issues.

The discussion could first start with what attracks most people, web
pages or programs for on this blog it is hit and miss app writers and not
those interested in apps.

Maybe we can get a discussion going.

          Bruce

I would like to see this done.

Hi all,

Sometimes I get emails from people who would like to write an app (to
help learn scripting better with, or as a project they can get
interested in), and they're looking for suggestions. So, I was hoping
we all could post our suggestions to the scripting and apps list when we
thought of such things, and if someone decided to take up an idea, I'd
hope they'd answer such a post to let others know someone else was
already working on that idea (we had a wiki entry at one time as a place
for people to list their plans but alas .).

Well, this idea comes as a result of various people asking me "have you
heard ." and then some recent news item. I'd like to say yes, I've
always heard, but I don't usually have the time to go keep checking CNN
(or even an RSS aggregator).

My idea is that I see CNN has their headlines in various categories
listed in an XML RSS file, which they update from time to time. I was
thinking it would be nice if, as they added some new headline in a
category you had marked as being of interest to you, your app (which
would check say once every 5 minutes) could either speak the headline,
or bring up the headline in a message box? Either way, perhaps you'd
have a hotkey which would bring up the headlines and allow you to jump
to the CNN page for a given headline.

So, that's my idea (which I don't have time for because I'm not
finishing my other ideas). Others are free to comment on it or modify
it until, in some form, it catches someone's interest.

It may not be the best app idea, but maybe just discussing app ideas
here will help us create one which is the best app idea (after all, it's
really (to me) where WE outshines all other competition, in that it's so
easy to create an app).
