Now, to dive into this idea a bit more, farbfeld is a great intermediate format. If you store farbfeld without compression on your hard drive, you kind of missed the point of it. Farbfeld is very unixy, as it benefits from pipelined-solutions. sent is not a pipe-based system, and to be honest, I've not yet come up with a good way to either decompress farbfeld-compressed images or ad-hoc running png's through png2ff and supplying the stream to the program.
