I thought the same (go back to ext3 or maybe bite the bullet and try btrfs) but in fairness this is the only time it's happened. I have been running this set-up for at least 1 year without problems. One thing I noticed with the recent HDDs I bought is that they seem lighter than normal AND I have had a spot of bad luck with another eBay drive... The weight thing might just be progress though!
